01Typical file sizes
- A phone photo: 2–5 MB, so 1,000 photos are about 3 GB.
- A camera RAW photo: 20–50 MB, so 1,000 are about 25 GB.
- An hour of phone video: about 4 GB at 1080p and 10 GB or more at 4K.
- A year of documents, PDFs and spreadsheets: usually under 5 GB.
- A computer’s Documents and Desktop: often 20–100 GB, much more with music or video projects.
Your phone’s storage settings and your computer’s folder sizes give you real numbers — use them if you can.
02Why plan for more than you have
Backups keep every version of a file, and the trash keeps what you delete until you empty it; both count towards your storage. Your library also grows: a phone that shoots 4K video can add 50 GB a year. The calculator adds 30% for both.
03Which plan
- 10 GB free: documents and a few thousand photos.
- 200 GB: a phone’s photo library and your documents.
- 500 GB: backups of a whole computer.
- 2 TB: years of photos and video, or several computers.
- 5 TB: archives, RAW libraries and media collections.
